Flavor of the Month: Cookies Galore!

The flavor of the month for December was cookies! A perfect theme for the holidays :D To see more delicious cookies visit Bake at 350!

After Kidlet's birthday I go in to super Christmas cookie baking mode.Cookies are the best gift we give to our family and friends and they ask about them every year!

Simple Gingerbread cookies!

Raspberry Thumbprints. This is just my sugar cookie dough pressed slightly and filled with some raspberry jam! White chocolate is drizzled on top.

Hidden Mint cookies are Kidlet's favorite! This recipe is by Paula Deen and can be found Here!

Reese cup cookies. This isn't really even a recipe. It uses refrigerated sugar cookie dough, bake in a mini muffin pan and stick mini reese cups in when they come out of the oven!

Snickerdoodles! These are my favorites!
This is a new one we tried this year. I do not remember where the recipe came from :( It has a cookie dough bottom, pretzels, peanuts, caramel, and chocolate! Yum!

Simple sugar cookies. I made so many of these that some were put in the freezer for later!

And finally, Cream Cheese Candy Cane cookies! These are always a big hit with the kids as well. The recipe is as follows:

1/4 c. butter, softened
1 (3oz.) pkg. cream cheese softened
1 egg
1 pkg. Pillsbury Moist Supreme White Cake Mix
1/4 tsp. red gel or food coloring

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, combine butter, cream cheese and
egg; blend well. Add cake mix; mix until well blended. Divide dough in half.
Add food coloring to half of dough; blend well for even red color.

For each cookie, measure 1 tsp. white dough and 1 tsp. red dough. Roll out
each into 4" ropes. Place ropes side by side. Lightly roll together; twist. Place
2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet; shape each to resemble candy canes.

Bake at 350 degrees for 7-9 minutes or just until edges are golden brown.
Immediately remove from cookie sheets.

Makes about 3 dozen.

Whew that was a lot of cookies! I hope you've all had a lovely holiday and are having a rocking good New Years Eve!

Happy Holidays!!

We're still trying to recover from Christmas here :D and getting ready for the New Year! I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday! Bento will resume next week! In the meantime, enjoy some silly holiday occurances :D

Kidlet is in a sea of presents. Most of which were for him of course. Now the living room looks like it's been taken over by a toy store! Today we must start putting everything away :D

Cookies from the Great Christmas Cookie Baking of '09! I will post more about these on the 31st. These are the tins we sent to our neighbors.

Kidlet had some friends over last week to decorate cookies and have cocoa. They had a great time!

And our little gingerbread house! It came together really nicely this year! Kidlet only helped with 1/2 because his friends came over partway through and he asked if I would finish it.

Candy Cane

This slightly off center bento picture is brought to you by nearly missing the bus this morning! I just couldn't let it go without getting my picture, and Kidlet made it just in time. Also a smaller bento today because it is the Winter party at school so he will be stuffing himself with junk and will undoubtedly ignore his lovely healthy lunch.

Today Kidlet has a candy cane cheese design on a soy ham sandwich with checkered apple, clementines, and blackberries

Kidlet is having a lot of fun this week counting down both the days until winter break and the days until Christmas. Only one more holiday bento before no school! I cannot believe how fast it goes!

Today Kidlet has a stocking made from cheese and food color markers on top of a tofurkey sandwich. Along the side are green beans, checkered apple, clementine segments, blackberries, and a little bottle of sugar for the berries.

String of Lights

This bento is very appropriate today because I spent all morning trying to hang our lights! I know it may seem late to some people but I did try almost a week ago to do it but they fell down! And then it was too cold to try again. But they are up now! yay!

Kidlet has a two tier bento for once. I don't use them often because they are usually too big but this one worked nicely for the pasta. He has pasta and tomato sauce with cheese light decorations and a string of pasta that I dyed blue. Top tier has green beans, clementine slices, and blackberries

Frosty the Snowman

This is the last week of school for Kidlet before Winter break starts. He is getting very excited! So this week will be all about the holiday bento!

Kidlet has Frosty the Snowman made of cheese and food coloring markers on top of a soy ham sandwich with green beans, carrots, checkered apple, blackberries, and a little panda of sugar for the berries.

Happy Birthday Kidlet

9 years ago today, Kidlet was born! Watching him grow up in to the amazing person he is now has been a great honor. I never imagined that I would have children and Kidlet has been a blessing his entire life. I can already see glimpses of the great man he is becoming every day. Love you Kid! In celebration, you get 9 years of Kidlet :D

Much like today, he leaves his socks everywhere!
I almost forget now what a sweet chubby face he once had!

What? Don't your kids hang out in storage bins too? No?
I miss this little kilt. He used to want to wear it everywhere!

Always a little geek, we had to beg special permission to do this activity at COSI because he was too little but I promised he could do it and stay well behaved, and he did!

One of the best costumes ever :D

A little cub scout!

I cannot believe his 7th birthday was so long ago now!

Naruto! He got to wear this spectacular costume two year in a row! It was so cool!

And Kidlet now! He looks so grown up I cannot believe it!

9th birthday bento

So, the universe was apparently against me making this bento which I find to be very rude. I had a spectacular 9th birthday bento planned for the Kidlet to take to school today but I was very low on food in the fridge. So the plan yesterday was to go shopping after the Kidlet got on the schoolbus. Easy! Except when the car doesn't start. And it's 6 degrees outside with wind chill so there was no way I was walking to the store. Humph. So I spent my morning having the van towed to the repair place. Still waiting to hear what's wrong and how much it will hurt the pocketbook.

So here is Kidlet's very sad 9th birthday bento. A big old 9 made of cheese on top of a soy ham sandwich with checkered apple, carrots, cucumber, dressing container, and a few pretzels.

These cupcakes also went to school with Kidlet today. Since his birthday is Sunday he gets to bring in his treats today to share with the class. The cupcakes are funfetti and the Bakugan symbols on top are made from royal icing.

FNCCC: Bakugan Birthday Cake

Okay, so this weeks Food Network Chefs Cooking Challenge could not have been more perfect! The chef this week was Duff Goldman from Ace of Cakes! To see other spectacular feats of cakery visit I Blame My Mother!

Kidlet's birthday is on Dec.13th but we had his party with his friends this past Sunday. With 15 kids coming I needed to make a big cake! Kidlet wanted, of course, Bakugan! Please note that while this was inspired by Duff, I have no skills and so it's not anywhere near the caliber of this amazing man.

The idea was for the cake to look like a Bakugan card, pictured above. I made the logo using royal icing on top of wax paper. It took about a week to dry because it had thick parts

If you've never seen or heard of Bakugan, it's an anime that is also a game kids play. The Bakugan are small plastic balls that open up into creatures when placed on a magnetic surface like the cards. I made the Drago out of rice crispie treats. I made the treats, let them cool slightly and then shaped them in to a ball. I let that sit out overnight. Then in the morning I cut the ball in half and made the features with 1/2 of the ball. Then I covered it with royal icing. After it dried I piped on the details with more royal icing

The cake had some cracking issues during transport but made it over to the party site mostly in tact. The best part is that Kidlet and his friends went bananas over it!

I believe they managed to consume 3/4 of the cake on site. The rest came home and is now long gone. Cake does not last around 8-9 year old boys!

And just for fun, here are the goody bags I made! I had a lot of brown paper bags from the last time Kidlet needed a disposable field trip lunch so I used those and drew the Bakugan symbols on!

Bento Bento

This one was Kidlet's idea. He said it would be funny if I made a bento inside of his bento. So I did!

Bento and chopsticks drawn on cheese with food color markers sit on top of a soy ham sandwich. Pretzels, checkered apple, cucumber, carrots, and a container of dressing are on the side.

There have been few bento lately because this weekend we had Kidlet's birthday party with all of his friends. Cake and pictures will be posted tomorrow :D

Flavor of the Month : Pumpkin Brioche French Toast

This month's flavor was Traditions! French Toast is something we love to have for breakfast in the winter time. I made this Pumpkin Brioche French Toast for breakfast on Thanksgiving morning and it is sure to become a tradition in our house! It was amazing! To see other Traditions this month check out Bake at 350!

I followed the instructions for Pumpkin Brioche found here! The next day I sliced the bread and made a mixture of egg, milk, a teeny bit of sugar, and a few shakes of pumpkin pie spice and used that to make the french toast! Simple!

Here it is sliced up for Kidlet. He has the Pumpkin Brioche French Toast, checkered apple, grapes, carrots, and a little bottle of syrup!

This is how I ate my french toast! Yum! It smelled just like pumpkin pie and tasted delicious!

Happy Thanksgiving and an award round up!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I hope you've all had a wonderful day! We took a year off from travel and just stayed home. I must say this was one of the best thanksgivings that I can remember!

I've been given a couple of awards recently and have neglected to post them :/ I'm bad. So here they are! Kreativ Blogger award came to me from ,, and Thank you guys!!!

For this one I am to state 7 things about myself and then pass it along to 7 other bloggers. I will have to opt out of the passing it along this time because I am pretty sure this one has been given to everyone by now! So, 7 random things about me:

1.) I was part of a missionary group that built churches and a school in the Dominican Republic when I was 12 years old. It was one of the most amazing and rewarding things I have ever experienced. I went back and did it again when I was 13.

2.) I love to travel! I was very fortunate to be a part of the People to People Student Ambassador program for a summer in Middle School and went to Australia and New Zealand with an unexpected stop off in Fiji to refuel when we were unable to land due to a volcanic eruption!

3.) I have switched my major in school many many times! I have so many interests it has always been hard for me to figure out what I want to do. I started out in Nursing school then Sociology, next was Graphic Arts.

4.) What I really want is to go to Culinary school and then open a bakery in North Pole Alaska! I want to be Mrs.Clause and have a cookie shop! How fun would that be?!

5.) I am not married but I was once engaged. Now I am of the age where everyone is always asking when I will finally marry! Well, I'd like to but I am too busy and I despise dating. Really, it's so awkward and horrible. Not interested. I told Kidlet when he leaves for college I will acquire some cats.

6.) I love Green Day! I saw them in concert and Kidlet is supremely jealous of that fact!

7.) I hate the sensation of falling so you will not see me on any amusement park rides! I will be the one at the bottom holding the belongings of the family :)

I also received the Happy Mama Blogger Award from Thank you! I am definitely a happy mama!! :D

Turkey and Pie

So, I don't know where my head went this week but if you find it, please direct it back to me! Yikes! Here are the bento from Monday and Tuesday. Monday Kidlet got a Turkey!

Cheese turkey sits on top of a tofurkey sandwich. At the side are checkered apple, carrots, and grapes!

This pie bento did not get eaten at school. It was an after school snack. Kidlet came home with ONLY THE PIE MISSING. He explained to me that today they celebrated all of the November and December birthdays at school and got cake at lunch. And since they celebrated 2 months they got 2 pieces. And then he ate the pie. And nothing else. Oy!

Pumpkin pie made of cheese sits on a soy ham sandwich. At the side are chocolate silk pie, check apple, and grapes. This is so the last time I ever ever send sweets!

Meet Prince Caspian

Thanksgiving bento have been interrupted to present the newest addition to our family: Prince Caspian! In the 3rd grade here the children study the life cycle of these small aquatic frogs and when they are done, if they have permission, they may take one home. Of course I gave permission! This is Kidlet's first pet!

Kidlet has frog of cheese on top of tofurkey sandwich with checkered apple, grapes, green beans, and orange slices.
And here is the real Prince Caspian! He is very cute and lives in a peanut butter jar. Kidlet would also like me to tell you that he dances when we sing to him :)

Kidlet: In Nineteen Hundred Ninety-Two Columbus sailed the ocean blue!
Me: ? I think you have your dates a little bit off there
Kidlet: *thinks* Nope that's right
Me: So Columbus discovered America when Mama was 9 years old?
Kidlet: Wow. You're older than I thought.

This is the discussion that took place as I prepped the bento this morning. I don't like to brag so you may not have known how tight Chris and I were back in the day. I love Kidlet's warped sense of historical timing. :)

Today is the Mayflower of cheese and food color marker on top of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Along for the ride are pretzels, checkered apple, green beans, orange slices, and grapes!

Clover Leaf Roll

This may not seem like a Thanksgiving bento but it is. And Kidlet requested it! I've been perusing recipes for rolls and found this super easy one at Lick The Bowl Good The only difference in mine is that I forgot to add in the salt! Whoops! But they still tasted amazing!

Kidlet has peanut butter and jelly on a homemade roll with orange slices, checkered apple, grapes, pretzels, and green beans

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Kidlet has just this week and two days next week before Thanksgiving break so I told him I would do a Thanksgiving bento every day that he has left. Of course, now that I know I will be spending Thanksgiving alone, I am feeling much less festive. But I promised so the cute bento will keep on coming!

Today he has a Cornucopia made of cheese and food color markers on top of a soy ham sandwich. Alongside are a checkered apple, grapes, and green beans. Nom!
