Flavor of the Month : Pumpkin Cream Cheese

This month's Flavor of the Month was Pumpkin, of course! I made Pumpkin Cream Cheese which has been devoured at an alarming speed. It's sooo good. Head over to Bake at 350 to see other delicious uses for Pumpkin!

I had some mini bagels on hand which is what prompted me to want to make the cream cheese.

Kidlet got some in his bento of course! He has one and a half mini bagels filled with pumpkin cream cheese, checkered apple, grapes, strawberry, and ghost!

Pumpkin Cream Cheese:

8oz package of cream cheese
3/4 c. pumpkin puree
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 TBSP light brown sugar
1 TBSP honey

Combine all ingredients in a bowl with a mixer. Chill in fridge. Eat on top of everything!

Kidlet felt he needed an accessory for his Panda costume so I made him some bamboo just in time for Trick-Or-Treat! It's just rolled up felt secured with hot glue and some felt leaves. So easy! And apparently tasty.

Happy Halloween everyone! Kidlet was well enough to go out for candy for just a little while but still managed a pretty good haul. And being the nerds that we are, no candy can be eaten until it is graphed! Math + Halloween = Fun? Yes indeed! Hope everyone is having a safe and delicious Halloween!

You Blockhead!

Kidlet is feeling much better today and has been sent back to school, yay! Of course at the bus stop the first question from all the kids was "Did you have the swine flu?" And just for the record, he did not :) I let him stay up to watch Charlie Brown the other night since he wasn't going to school the next day. He said he wanted a great pumpkin bento so here it is!

Kidlet has a great pumpkin scene made of cheese and food color marker on top of a soy ham sandiwch. On the side there is a checkered apple, carrots, and strawberries with a pumpkin pick!

Originally when I sketched this out I was not going to include Snoopy. But I had lunch with my dad the other day and he gave me a CD of old family photo that had been scanned. Included are many, many pictures of my Great Great Uncle Ralph. Known to everyone in our family as simply Crazy Uncle Ralph. Looks like a Flying Ace to me!

So, of course Snoopy had to be included in his Flying Ace gear, in honor of Crazy Uncle Ralph :D

I was going to do a whole week of Halloween bento and then Kidlet got sick. He is missing out on Trick-Or-Treat and everything, poor thing. This is the bento from last Friday that I never got around to posting.

I'm not happy with the giants gaps here that I didn't see. I usually do bento in the evening but this was an early morning one so I guess that's how it goes!

Kidlet has two tombstone peanut butter and honey sandwich, RIP in cheese with food color markers, grapes with ghost skewer, mandarin oranges, bell pepper, and carrot bat.

I have two days left for fun Halloween bento so I think tomorrow will be Great Pumpkin and then something involving the pumkpkin cream cheese I made. Fun!

Funny Face Monster thing?

So I was going to try to make a scary monster but I don't think I quite got it. Running low on groceries didn't help! Oh well, it made Kidlet giggle and he ate it all up so that's alright!

The "monster" eyes are two homemade rolls with peanut butter and honey, a grape nose, orange lips with bell pepper tongue, yellow bell pepper eyebrows, and some cucumber and dressing in a container on the side.

WFMW: No-Sew Panda Costume

Okay this is the first time I am doing this Works for Me Wednesday. I know it's not bento related but it's cute :) You can join in the fun and see other WFMW posts over at We Are That Family

Kidlet loves Halloween but Halloween costumes that are commercially made do not love Kidlet. He is tall and skinny, terrible I know. To get a costume that is long enough, he ends up drowning in the costume. No good. So I have always made his costumes. The trouble I first encountered is that I do not sew. Sure, I can do buttons and Cub Scout patches but make an entire costume? Nope. So I improvised and found my one true love, hot glue.

This Panda costume is made entirely of 2 sweatshirts and hot glue. I made it in about 30 minutes while watching Survivor. To make a no-sew panda all you have to do is cut the two sweatshirts apart. No need for marking or measuring, I like to wing it. Then, on the underside of the sweatshirts, glue those suckers together. Add some of the leftover black sweatshirt on top for ears, it really couldn't be simpler.

You could do this for any sort of bear or furry animal. It's comfortable and fun! And best of all, not a single stitch was used! You may wonder how well this will hold up. Well, it has held up to the roughest treatment Kidlet could give it and looks just like this now. Hot glue is suprisingly sturdy.
So there is my WFMW! Hot glue Pandas work for me!

This was yesterday's bento since Kidlet had no school today! Teacher in-service or some such event. All the neighbor kids were in my house as a result of the cold, coloring on the windows. If you've never seen Window Markers before they are amazing. Kids love to color and they love the feeling of doing something they normally are not allowed to do! It gave me lots of time to keep peeling apples for applesauce!

Kidlet's first Halloween bento of the season has two peanut butter and jelly pumpkins with cheese heads, carrot bats on top of green pepper, apple skulls on top of more apple slices.

I'm really sad about the colors on this one because it person they were so lively! Sadly, it was raining and gloomy so I couldn't get a decent picture.

Bento doesn't have to be complicated or overly cutesy to be delicious and nice to look at. We had appetizers for dinner and there were some leftover, just perfect for bento!

Kidlet has spinach and artichoke bread bowl bites with checkered apple, orange wedges, soy chik'n nuggets, and grapes. He was very excited about this bento today!

Kidlet has a stuffed Panda that he got for his birthday last year. It went unnamed for a very long time. About a month ago Kidlet was playing and tackled me so I began hitting him with the paw of the Panda *gently of course* He stopped, looked at me and said "What are you doing?" I told him I was beating him with the Panda Paw of Doom. To that I got an eye roll and a "But Mama, it doesn't hurt! He has soft, sweet paddy paws!" And thus the Panda was dubbed PaddyPaws.

Kidlet has PaddyPaws of cheese on top of a soy sausage patty sandwich. To the side are grapes, cucumber, carrots, dressing, and a checkered apple.

And a happy Kidlet with his PaddyPaws!

Apple Pancakes

Kidlet and I went to an Apple Orchard on Saturday to pick our own apples! We've never done anything like it before and it was amazing! We had so much fun! I highly recommend apple picking on a cool Autumn day! As a result of said apple picking we came home with 24 pounds of apples. Luckily, many of my favorite bloggy people have been posting great apple recipes recently! I made apple pancakes for dinner from a recipe from Disposable Aardvarks Inc. After dinner I used some more of the batter to make mini pancakes for bento!

Kidlet has mini apple pancakes, soy sausage on skewers, a mini apple from the orchard, grapes, green beans, and a little bottle of syrup.

There were lots of low apples that Kidlet could reach on his own. Good thing because Mama got tired of boosting him up for the high ones!

One of Kidlet's favorite parts was the fact that while in the Orchard you could eat as many apples as you wanted to try them out.

Baskets of apples. You don't realize how many you really have when they are in a festive bushel like that. It's when you get them home and have them all over your kitchen counter that it sets in. So please if you have any good apple recipes let me have them! I have a lot of apples to play with!

Fleur De Lis

I am such a bad blogger. I've been sick and having a hard time getting back in to the swing of things! Here is a lunch from last week! Kidlet started Cub Scouts again this past week so I made him a Fleur De Lis bento!

Kidlet has a Fleur De Lis made of cheese and food color markers on top of a soy ham sandwich. Along the side are a checkered apple, grapes, orange slices, and green beans!
