Barbaloot Bento

A friend of the Lorax, today's lunch includes a Barbaloot! These little teddy bear creatures are a favorite of mine and Kidlet's! Now normally I do not include sweets in a bento lunch, however there is a Lorax commercial out there showing a group of adorable Barbaloots with marshmallows raining down on them! So cute!  The Truffula tree marshmallows is an idea I stole from The Decorated Cookie.

The Lorax Bento

The Lorax is of course getting a lot of attention lately with the new movie coming this week so I thought he would be the perfect start to a few Dr.Suess bento lunches you will see this week :)

Signed, Sealed, Delivered!

I must admit that I did not come up with this idea. I've seen it in lots of different places recently and thought it was super cute.

Today Kidlet got a Biscoff sandwich shaped like a letter with a cheese heart seal. n the side are grapes, checkered apple, blackberries, and strawberries.

It was snowing when I tried to take pictures this morning. I'm always curious, where do you take your lunch pictures? To get good lighting I take mine on to the porch in the morning but on snowy days like today it can get complicated!

It was actually actively snowing when I was trying to take my pics this morning!

Heart Sandwich Bento

When I asked Kidlet if it was okay if I made heart lunches for Valentines Day he took a lot of time to think about it but finally decided that I could but that this would be the last year. Apparently hearts in middle school are a no-no.

My Heart Shaped Roll recipe can be found Here

Doctor Who K-9 Bento

It's been a crazy week in our house! I'm recovering from a blood transfusion so bento lunches may be even more sporadic in the coming weeks. Hoping to be feeling better soon. I'm just glad I was feeling good enough last night to throw a bento together for today! Woo!

K-9 is a robotic dog from Doctor Who and Kidlet just loves him!

K-9 is cheese and food coloring markers and sits on a soy ham sandwich. On the side are checkered apple, grapes, and clementine wedge.

Let's all just get along!

When I first started making bento, I did it badly. I mean really badly. I was new and enthusiastic but my skills were not quite there yet. It took time and practice to become better. While I was learning I met lots of bento mamas with waaayyy better skills than I had. They could have torn me apart with my sad ugly bento lunches and I probably would never have made another lunch again. But they didn't. They chose to build me up and encourage me. I was inspired by them and learned so many new things.

The world is full of a lot of meanness. We see school bullying becoming a huge problem in the media now. The internet is a wonderful tool but it can also bring with it a lot of hurt. Words are powerful. It doesn't matter if you speak them or type them. They make an impact....sometimes in ways we could never imagine.

Recently, lots of my bento buddies and I have been seeing a trend towards negative comments about what we do. From the snarky to the downright cruel, people seem to think that anything that pops into their heads should be put down as a comment. Does it really matter to you if I have a job outside of the home? If I have one child or 10? We all have the same number of hours in a day and the great thing is we get to choose how we spend them. I like to make bento lunches for my son. I'm not asking you to make them. Do you have a right to be nasty and horrible to people? Yepp, you do. Does that mean you should do it? Uhm, no.

Everyone in this world wants some of the basic things. We want to belong and have people like us. You don't have to like me or understand why I do what I do. We can all be polite even when we don't completely understand each other. I would like to see more people making a decision to build each other up instead of tearing each other down. It's not really so hard.

So before you make a comment, just think! Will this be helpful or am I doing potential harm to someone? If it's the latter....maybe you could just pass on by without saying a thing.

*ahem* *steps off soapbox* Sorry for this all text post, more fun lunches coming later this week :)

Chik'n Tikka Masala Bento

We are big fans of Indian food here and since take-out food is delicious but expensive, I had been learning how to cook our favorites myself! I make a big batch of this sauce and freeze it in small portions so we can have quick and delicious Indian food whenever we like!I add chicken to mine and make a separate pot for Kidlet that has Boca Chik'n nuggets cut up.

Kidlet has a thermos of Chik'n Tikka Masala with basmati rice. On the side is flat bread, carrots, blackberries, checkered apple, and strawberry.
